Sea Spray Shawl
The Sea Spray Shawl crochet pattern is available to purchase from Ravelry and Etsy!

Sometimes I wander around my local yarn shop just looking and hoping for some inspiration and on this particular day I stumbled across the Sheepjes Whirl yarn. I hadn’t designed a shawl yet and this yarn just seemed perfect.
I started off well with the pattern but for some reason I got myself quite confused. After many hours of struggling to make the pattern work, I realised I had unnecessarily made the design too complicated. I nearly abandoned the idea but instead, I persisted, had a rethink and simplified the pattern. The outcome is the beautiful Sea Spray Shawl.
The Sea Spray Shawl is a lightweight, textured accessory with just the right touch of elegance. It is designed with summer days and seaside breezes in mind and is a joy to make and even more delightful to wear.

The Sea Spray Shawl is a lightweight, triangular wrap made with soft 4ply (fingering weight) yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook. It’s ideal for layering over a summer dress or wrapping around your shoulders on a breezy evening. The name comes from the gentle wave-like textures and open stitches that evoke sea foam and coastal air.
One of my favourite things about the Sea Spray Shawl is how wearable it is. The lightweight fabric drapes effortlessly, and the triangular shape means you can style it in several ways – wrapped around your shoulders, bandana-style, or bunched up like a scarf.
Whether you’re making it for yourself or as a gift, it’s sure to become a favourite.

Construction
This is an intermediate pattern, perfect if you’re ready to move beyond simple repeats and want to explore a variety of stitches. It features a beautifully textured stitch pattern that combines shells, chains, and post stitches for a look that’s both airy and structured.
While it’s not a beginner project, confident crocheters will enjoy the rhythm and challenge of working through the different stitch combinations. And of course, the pattern includes clear instructions and stitch counts to keep you on track.
The Sea Spray Shawl is started with a magic circle and then you will work in sections towards the point.
Yarn and Materials
To make your own Sea Spray Shawl, you’ll need:
- 4ply (fingering weight) yarn
- 3.5mm crochet hook
- A yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Optional: stitch markers for tracking repeat sections
This design works beautifully in solid or semi-solid yarns that show off the stitch texture. You could even try a gentle gradient or hand-dyed skein for a soft, coastal look.
Have fun and happy crocheting!
